today Saphala Ekadashi / सफला एकादशी

Saphala Ekadashi / सफला एकादशी :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
 Once there lived a great and powerful king by the name of Mahishmitha. He had four sons. The eldest was called Lumpaka. Lumapaka was arrogant and was indulging all the possible bad deeds that a person should not do. He was not even refraining himself from hurting people. He used to punish common people and enjoy. The king saw this for a long time and warned Lumpaka to change his behaviour. After few warnings also Lumpaka did not change. As per dharma Lumpaka was supposed to be given a death sentence but King Mahishmitha could not kill his son and so ordered him to leave the kindom. Lumpaka was exiled from the kingdom. Lumpaka started to live in a forest outside the kingdom. Exiling him did not change the behavior of Lumpaka. He was still the same. Once there was a very cold winter and Lumpaka was finding it very difficult to find food. Lumpaka began very weak and soon his health detoriated. He fell ill and was unconscious for two days. He woke up on the day of Saphala Ekadasi. Because of his weakness he was not in a position to hunt so was not able to get any food. There was a idol of Lord Vishnu at he place he fell unconscious. He saw the idol and prayed to Lord Vishnu for his fast recovery. He offered the fruits that fell on the ground to Lord Vishnu. Lumpaka was not able to get any food was fasting the whole day and as he did not have enough food was not able to sleep the whole night. Lumpaka has actually performed the Ekadasi Vrat of fasting for the whole day and keeping awake for the whole night. The virtue of performing the Ekadasi Vrat is very high and removes all the sin. Observing the Ekadasi Vrat would fetch wealth and prosperity. By virtue of the Saphala Ekadasi Vrat Lumpaka observed that his energy was renewed. His sins were washed off and his thought process was also changed. Now Lumpaka became a completely different person. A person who would respect elders, follow the Dharmas, love others etc. Suddenly there was a voice from the sky which said that Lumpaka was freed from all the sins and that he should return to his father and rule the kingdom. As soon as Lumpaka reached his kingdom, he saw that Mahishmitha was there to welcome him. He was astonished and was eager to know how his father knew that he was coming. Mahishmitha replied that Lord Vishnu had come in his dream last night and said that Lumpaka would return to the kingdom. The lord also said that Lumpaka was changed and should be welcomed. He ruled the kingdom after his father following all the dharmas and was applauded by one and all. Thus by observing the Saphala Ekadasi Vrat Lumpaka was able to change his fortune and himself. By observing Saphala Ekadasi one would get back all that is lost and much more like health, wealth, belongings, affection, honor etc. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: HSVJ

☼ TODAY MOKSHADA EKADASI ☼(12-13-2013)

Vaikuntha Ekadashi / Mokshada Ekadasi / Mukkoti

Ekadashi.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The Ancient History of Mokshada Ekadasi from

Brahmanda Purana:

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Yudhishthira Maharaj said, "O Vishnu, master of all, O delight of the three worlds, O Lord of the entire Universe, O creator of the world, O oldest personality, O best of all beings, I offer my most respectful obeisances unto You.
......
Lord Sri Krishna replied, "O dear Yudhishthira, your enquiry is very auspicious in itself and will bring you fame. Just as I previously explained to you about the dearest Utpannaa Maha-Dwadasi - which occurs during the dark part of the month of Margashirsha, which is the day when Ekadasi-devi appeared from My body to kill the demon Mura, and which benefits everything animate and inanimate in the three worlds - so I shall now relate to you regarding this Ekadasi that occurs during the light part of the month of Margashirsha. This Ekadasi is famous as Mokshadaa because it purifies the faithful devotee of all sinful reactions and bestows liberation upon him. The worshippable Deity of this all auspicious day is Lord Damodara. With full attention one should worship Him with incense, a ghee lamp, fragrant flowers, and Tulasi manjaris (buds).
"O best of saintly kings, please listen as I narrate to you the ancient and auspicious history of this wonderful Ekadasi. Simply by hearing this history one can attain the merit earned by performing a horse sacrifice. By the influence of this merit, one's forefathers, mothers, sons, and other relatives who have gone to hell can turn around and go to the heavenly kingdom. For this reason alone, O king, you should listen with rapt attention to this narration.
"There once was a beautiful city named Champaka-nagar, which was decorated with devoted Vaishnavas. There the best of saintly kings Maharaj Vaikhaanasa, ruled over his subjects as if they were his very own dear sons and daughters. The brahmins in that capital city were all expert in four kinds of Vedik knowledge. The king, while ruling properly, had a dream one night in which his father was seen to be suffering the pangs of hellish torture in one of the hellish planets ruled over by the Yamaraj. The king was overwhelmed with compassion for his father and shed tears. The next morning, Maharaj Vaikhaanasa described what he had seen in his dream to his council of twice born learned brahmins.
" ' O brahmanas,' the king addressed them, 'in a dream last night I saw my father suffering on a hellish planet. He was crying out in anguish, "O son, please deliver me from this torment of this hellish condition !" Now I have no peace in my mind, and even this beautiful kingdom has become unbearable to me. Not even my horses, elephants, and chariots and my vast wealth in my treasury that formerly brought so much pleasure, gives me no pleasure at all.
" 'Everything, O best of the brahmins, even my own wife and sons, have become a source of unhappiness since I beheld my father suffering the tortures of that hellish condition so. Where can I go, and what can I do, O brahmins, to alleviate this misery? My body is burning with fear and sorrow ! Please tell me what kind of charity, what mode of fasting, what austerity, or what deep meditation, and in service upon which Deity I may have to perform to deliver my father from that agony and bestow upon liberation upon my forefathers. O best among the brahmins, what is the use of one's being a powerful son if one's father must suffer on a hellish planet? Truly, such a son's life is utterly useless, to him and to his forefathers.
" The twice born brahmins replied, 'O king, in the mountainous forest not far from here is the ashram where a great saint Parvata Muni resides. Please go to him, for he is tri-kala-jnan (he knows the past, the present, and the future of everything) and can surely help you in your gaining relief from your misery.'
"Upon hearing this advise, the distressed king immediately set out on a journey to the ashram of the famous sage Parvata Muni. The ashram was indeed very big and housed many learned sages expert in chanting the sacred hymns of the four Vedas (Rg, Yajur, Sama, and Arthava). Approaching the holy ashram, the king beheld Parvata Muni seated among the assembly of sages adorned with hundreds of tilaks (from all the authorised sampradayas) like another Brahmaa or Vyaas.
"Maharaj Vaikhaanasa offered his humble obeisances to the muni, bowing his head and then prostrating his entire body before him. After the king had seated himself among the assembly Parvata Muni asked him about the welfare of the seven limbs of his extensive kingdom (his ministers, his treasury, his military forces, his allies, the brahmins, the sacrificial offerings performed, and the needs of his subjects). The muni also asked him if his kingdom was free of troubles and whether everyone was peaceful, happy and satisfied. To these enquiries the king replied, 'By your mercy O glorious and great sage, all seven limbs of my kingdom are doing very well. Yet there is a problem that has recently arisen, and to solve it I have come to you, O brahmana for your expert help and guidance'.
"Then Parvata Muni, the best of all sages, closed his eyes and meditated on the king's past, present and future. After a few moments he opened his eyes and said, 'Your father is suffering the results of committing a great sin, and I have discovered what it is. In his previous life he quarrelled with his wife and forcibly enjoyed her sexually during her menstrual period. She tried to protest and resist his advances and even yelled out, "Someone please save me! Please, O husband, do not interrupt my monthly period in this way!" Still he did not stop or leave her alone. It is on account of this grievous sin that your father now has fallen into such a hellish condition of suffering.'
"King Vaikhaanasa then said, 'O greatest among sages, by what process of fasting or charity may I liberate my dear father from such a condition? Please tell me how I can relieve and remove the burden of his sinful reactions, which are a great obstacle to his progress toward ultimate release (salvation - liberation - going back home).'
"Parvata Muni replied, 'During the light fortnight of the month of Margashirsha there occurs an Ekadasi called Mokshadaa. If you observe this sacred Ekadasi strictly, with a full fast, and give directly to your suffering father the merit you will thus attain/obtain, he will be freed from his pain and instantly liberated'.
"Hearing this, Maharaj Vaikhaanasa profusely thanked the great sage and then returned to his palace to perform his vrata (austere rite, austerity). O Yudhishthira, when the light part of the month of Margashirsha at last arrived, Maharaj Vaikhaanasa faithfully waited for the Ekadasi tithi to arrive. He then perfectly and with full faith observed the Ekadasi fast with his wife, children, and other relatives. He dutifully gave the merit from this fast to his father, and as he made the offering, beautiful flower petals showered down from the devas who peered out from behind the clouds in the sky. The king's father was then praised by the messengers of the demigods (devas) and escorted to the celestial region. As he passed his son, as he traversed the lower to middle to higher planets, the father said to the king, 'My dear son, all auspiciousness unto you!'

At last he reached the heavenly realm from where he can again with his newly acquired merit perform devotional service to Krishna or Vishnu and in due course return back to home back to Godhead.

"O son of Pandu, who so ever strictly observes the sacred Mokshadaa Ekadasi, following the established rules and regulations, achieves full and perfect liberation after death. There is no better fasting day than this Ekadasi of the light fortnight of the month of Margashirsha, O Yudhishthira, for it is a crystal-clear and sinless day. Whoever faithfully observes this Ekadasi fast, which is like chintaa-mani (a gem that yields all desires), obtains special merit that is very hard to calculate, for this day can elevate one from hellish life to the heavenly planets, and for one who observes Ekadasi for his own spiritual benefit, this elevates one to go back to Godhead, never to return to this material world."

Prabodhini Ekadashi / प्रबोधनी एकाद्शी

Prabhodhini Ekadashi, also known as Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Utthana Ekadashi, Bodhini Ekadashi and Dev Utthana Ekadashi, is observed in the month of Kartik in the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu devotees believe that Lord Vishnu woke up from his Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) on this day, thereby marking the end of the Chaturmaas vrat.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Legends state that the consort of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi was unsatisfied with the way Lord Vishnu slept. Sometimes, he remained awakened for days and sometimes, he slept continuously for several days. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi visited Lord Vishnu and complained about his indiscipline followed. She also informed him that several lords, such as Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Devas and Saints, are forced to wait for many days in order to meet him. Hence, they returned disappointed without having Lord Vishnu’s Darshan. Furthermore, this neutral situation of Lord Vishnu is highly taken advantage of by the demons. They make the most of this opportunity in causing pain to human beings, thereby leading to the spread of Adharma on earth.

After patiently listening to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu replied that he would soon come up with a solution. Meanwhile, the Devas and Saints visit Lord Vishnu and inform him about the robbery of the Vedas by a Demon named Shankhyayan. The demon had committed this act in order to deprive the human beings about the knowledge of the Vedas and spread Adharma all around. On hearing this, Lord Vishnu promised the sages that he would get back the Vedas. After fighting for several days with Demon Shankhyayan, he was successful in getting the Vedas back. He returned the Vedas to Goddess Lakshmi, Devas and Saints. Additionally, he insisted on continuing with a long sleep but only for four months.

This sleep started from Ashadha Shuddha Ekadashi until Kartik Shuddha Ekadashi, which is also known as Prabhodhini Ekadashi or Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Various pujas and prayers are carried on this day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The important Pandarpur Yatra also takes place on this day in Lord Vithal Temple. The most popular Tulsi Vivah Festival and Shaligram Puja rituals also commence on Prabhodhini Ekadashi in some regions while in other communities, they take place on the day after Ekadashi. By observing the Prabhodhini Ekadashi vrat, devotees believe that they would be able to get rid off their sins and attain salvation, or Moksha.

Tomorrow is Rama Ekadashi.

Rama Ekadashi // रमा एकादशी
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Rama Ekadashi Importance & Story.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The importance of the fast and the story associated it with was narrated to Yudhishtira by Lord Krishna. People observing the fast read or listen to the Rama Ekadasi Vrat Katha. It is said that this Ekadasi is a wish fulfilling one.

Legend has it that there lived a powerful and famous king named Muchukunda. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and his kingdom was famous through out the world.

King Muchukunda had a daughter named Chandrabhaga, she was married to Prince Shobhana. Once, the newly married prince and princess visited Muchukunda. It was during the Ekadasi period and Princess Chandrabhaga was worried as Prince Shobhana was weak and could not bear hunger so he will not be able to observe Ekadasi fasting. King Muchukunda was strict about observing Ekadasi fasting.

So Princess Chandrabhaga asked the prince to return back to his kingdom. But Prince Shobhana wanted to observe the Ekadasi fasting.

All the people in the kingdom including the Prince started observing the fast. At night all the people kept vigil. Prince Shobhana could not bear the hunger and thirst and died during the course of the night.

Due to the influence of observing Rama Ekadasi, Prince Shobhana became the king of Devapura – kingdom of celestial beings – and the city was located atop the Mandara Mountain. But the kingdom was a temporary one as the Prince had only observed the Ekadasi fasting once.

Once a learned saint from the land of King Muchukunda visited Shobhana. The Prince was happy to receive the saint and to hear about his wife. Then Shobhana told the saint that he needed the help of his wife to make his temporary kingdom permanent as she was always observing Ekadasi fasting and she has the power to do it.

The saint went to the Princess and told about her husband, Shobhana, and his new Kingdom. Princess Chandrabhaga wanted to meet her husband and for this she took the help of Sage Vamadeva who was residing in the Mandara Mountain. Soon she was transported to the temporary celestial kingdom of her husband. Due to the power of observing Rama Ekadasi the kingdom became permanent and royal couple became celestial beings.

....................Tomorrow is Pashankush Ekadashi.......................

Pashankusha Ekadashi : पापाकुंशा एकादशी
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Story of of Pashankusha Ekadashi
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Yudhishthira Maharaj said, “Oh Madhusudana, what is the name of the Ekadashi that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Ashvina?
Please be merciful and disclose this truth to me."
The Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna replied, "Oh king, please listen as I explain the glories of Pashankusha Ekadashi - which removes all sins. On this day one should worship the Deity of Padmanabha, the lotus naveled Lord Vishnu, according to the rules of archana viddhi (regulations). By so doing, one achieves whatever heavenly pleasures one may want in this world, and at last attains liberation from this world thereafter. Simply by offering one's humble obeisances unto Lord Vishnu, one can achieve the same merit as is gained by performing great penances for a long time restraining and controlling the senses. Although a person might have committed unlimited and abominable sins, he can still escape hellish punishment just by paying his obeisances to Lord Sri Hari, the taker away of all sin."
"The merits gained by going on pilgrimage to the Holy Tirthas of this earthly planet can also be achieved simply by chanting the Holy names of Lord Vishnu. Whosoever chants these sacred names - such as Rama, Vishnu, Janardana or Krishna - especially on Ekadashi, never sees Yamaraj, the king of death's punishing abode. Nor does such a devotee who fasts on Pashankusha (Papankusha) Ekadashi, which is very dear to Me, see that hellish place."

"Both the Vaishnava who criticizes Lord Shiva and the Shaivite who criticizes Me certainly go to hell. The merit obtained by performing one hundred horse sacrifices and one hundred Rajasurya sacrifices is not even equal to one sixteenth of the merit a devotee is able to attain by fasting on Ekadashi. There is no higher merit one can achieve than that attained by fasting on Ekadashi. Indeed, nothing in all the three worlds is as pleasing or as able to purify one of accumulated sin as Ekadashi, the day of the lotus-naveled Lord, Padmanabha.”

"O king, until a person observes a fast on the day of Lord Padmanabha named Papankusha Ekadashi, he remains sinful, and the reactions of his past sinful activities never leave him like a chaste wife. There is no merit in all the three worlds that can match the merit that one gains by observing a fast on this Ekadashi. Whosoever observes it faithfully never has to see death personified, Lord Yamaraj. One who desires liberation, elevation to the heavens, good health, wealth, and food grains should simply fast on this Pashankusha Ekadashi. O king, neither the Ganges, Gaya, Kashi, nor Pushkara, nor even the Holy site of Kurukshetra, can grant as much auspicious merit as this Papankusha Ekadashi.

O Maharaj Yudhishthira, protector of the earth, after observing Ekadashi during the daytime, the devotee should remain awake through the night, absorbed in hearing, chanting and serving the Lord - for by so doing he easily attains to the Supreme abode of Lord Vishnu. Not only that, but ten generations of ancestors on his mother's side, ten generations on his father's side, and ten generations on his wife's side are all liberated by a single observance of a fast on this Ekadashi. All these ancestors attain their original, four armed transcendental Vaikuntha forms. Wearing yellow garments and beautiful garlands, they ride to the spiritual realm on the back of Garuda, the renowned great enemy of the snakes. This is the benediction My devotee earns simply by observing one Papankusha Ekadashi properly.

"O best of kings, whether one is a child, a youth, or in old age, fasting on Papankusha Ekadashi frees him from all sins and makes him immune to suffering a hellish rebirth. Whosoever observes a fast on the Papankusha Ekadashi becomes free of all his sins and returns to the spiritual abode of Lord Sri Hari. Whosoever donates gold, sesame seeds, fertile land, cows, grain, drinking water, an umbrella, or a pair of shoes on this most auspicious of Holy days will never have to visit the abode of Yamaraj, who always punishes the sinners. But if a resident of earth fails to perform spiritual deeds, especially the observance of a fast on days such as Ekadashi, his breathing is said to be no better, or of as much use as the breathing/puffing of a blacksmith's bellows.

O best of the kings, especially on this Papankusha Ekadashi, even the poor should first bathe and then give some charity according to their means, and perform other auspicious activities in accordance with their ability.

Whosoever performs sacrifices and benefits the people, or builds public ponds, resting places, gardens, or houses do not suffer the punishments of Yamaraj. Indeed, one should understand that a person must have performed such pious activities as these in the past life if he is long lived, wealthy, of high birth, or free from all diseases. But a person who observes Papankusha Ekadashi goes to the abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu.”

Thus ends the narration of the glories of the Pashankusha Ekadashi or Papankusha Ekadashi, or Ashwina-shukla Ekadashi, from the Brahma-vaivarta Purana.

................Shami Puja on Vijaya Dashami.........................

Shastra Puja & Shami Pooja on Aaswin shudha Navami.
Shami Puja on Vijaya Dashami.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Shami Pujan and Ashmantak tree should also be worshipped on Vijayadashmi. There is a story related to this Pujan, according to which Devi Parvati asks Lord Shiva about the significance of Shami Tree on which lord Shiva says that Arjun hid his weapons in the hole of a Shami Tree during his time of exile and started living as a Vrihanna in the kingdom of King Virat.
Later on with the help of king's Son, Arjun collected his weapons from the tree and got victory over his enemies. This way Shami tree protected Arjun's weapons. Other than this, when Lord Rama was marching towards the Lanka, Shami tree told him that he will get victory. This is the reason that Shami tree is worshipped on the day of Vijayadashmi. If one is unable to find Shami tree, then Ashmantak tree can also be worshipped.
People exchange the leaves of the Shami tree among friends and relatives as gold. Aparijita and Vishnu Kranta plant is also worshipped on this day. This plant brings victory and is dear to lord Vishnu. Along with paying for victory people also pray for joy and prosperity.
Shastra Puja
By worshipping the weapons on this day people call for the power of god. They clean their weapons that are used in daily lives, arrange them in a row and worship them. This is an important festival of Kshatriya and they worship Devi Aparajita on this day. People achieve happiness in all spheres of life by worshipping on this day.

“Shamee” or” banni”was the kula devate for Paandavaas and even Srinivasa also told that it is his kuladeva.

shami shamayatE paapaM shamI shatruvinaashini |
arjunasya dhanurdhaari raamasya priyavaadini |
शमि शमयते पापं शमी शत्रुविनाशिनि ।
अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारि रामस्य प्रियवादिनि ।
Shamee Tree destroys our paapaa, it destroys our enemies. It was holding the Dhanas of Arjuna for one full year and it is Sri Ramachandra’s favourite tree.

Pandavaas after being cheated by kauravaas, and having finished their 12 years “vanavaasa” (stay at forest), had to observe Ajnathavasa, (i.e., to stay in a well known place, but their identity not to be traced by any). So, in order to stay in Viratanagar, they kept all their weapons in a Shamee tree. When they returned from Ajnathavasa, the weapons were safe there, so, to express their gratitute, they started worshipping Shamee tree. The same custom is being practiced even today.

Shamee is helpful for pregnant woman to prevent miscarriage. Shamee is useful for treatment of astama, bronchitis, desentery, locoderma and piles.

There is a custom on Vijayadashami Day to do the pooja for Shamee Tree. People also exchange shamee leaves among other friends and elders with the shloka ”Shamee shamayate paapam………………..”. In Mysore on the Dasara procession day, i.e., on Vijayadashami day, the Procession starts from palace grounds and ends at Bannimantap, Mysore, wherein we can find Banni trees, and which Mysore kings used to worship.

Why Shamee leaves are exchanged among brahmins -

People distribute leaves of Shamee tree on Dussehra and Vijayadasami day. In this ritual, Shamee tree leaves symbolically represents gold or sona. People present shamee tree leaves to friends, relatives and neighbours and wish happy Dasara. There is an interesting story on why shamee tree leaves are presented on Dussera.

There is a story about Guru Dakshine & shamee Tree-
An young brahmin named Kautsa in Ayodhya, during Tretayuga, once after completing education from Guru asked his Guru to accept a Guru Daskhina – a present offered by students to Guru named Varatantu, after completing their studies.

Guru Sri Varatantu at first said he did not want any Dakshina. But young Kautsa insisted that he should take a Dakshina. Guru Varatantu to get rid of Kautsa asked him for 14 crore (140 million) gold coins. One hundred million for each subject taught.

The student then went to Sri Ramachandra devaru, who was ruling Ayodhya and asked for the gold coins needed to pay his Guru Dakshina. Sri Ramachandra promised to help Kautsa and asked him to wait near the Shamee (Shamee Tree is favourite for Ramachandra). In three days time, Sri Ramachandra with the help of Lord Kuber, the God wealth, showered gold coins from the leaves of Shamee Tree. The leaves of the trees became gold coins.

Kautsa collected the coins and gave 140 million gold coins to Guru Sri Varatantu. The rest of coins were distributed to the needy by Kautsa. This happened on a Dussehra day. To commemorate this event even today people collect leaves of Shamee tree and present it as gold.

Vijayadasami Story

Vijaya Dashami
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Vijayadasami Story
Lord Shri Rama got victory on this day. On the tenth day of Ashwin Shukla, a star named Sandhya rises and during its rise a phase comes known as "Vijya Kaal" that is considered auspicious to complete any work. There is a story related to the celebration of this festival, which is as follows:
Once Devi Parvati was curious to know about the importance of this festival. She asked Lord Shiva to give her the answer and settle down her curiosity. Lord Shiva told her that in the evening of Ashwin Shukla's tenth day a star rises in the sky during which a phase comes knows as " Vijya Kaal" and this phase is auspicious to get victory over enemies and all the wishes are fulfilled during this Kaal.
If Shravan Nakshatra is formed on this day, then it becomes more auspicious. Lord Rama attacked Lanka during this phase and got victory over Ravana.
Simollanghan
It is a significant festival for Kshatriyas. They believe that when there is no war, the kings must exceed the limit of their kingdom on this day. Once King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of this day on which Lord Krishna told him that on the day of Vijayadashmi all the kings should decorate their slaves, elephants and horses and celebrate the festival with full zeal and enthusiasm.
The king along with his priest should depart towards the eastern side of his kingdom to exceed the limit of his kingdom's boundaries and worship the Vastu Dev, Ashta-Digpal and Partha Deva. He should make a mannequin of his enemy and dig an arrow into his chest while chanting the Vedic Mantras. Complete all the rituals and head back to his kingdom. Any king who performs these rituals will always gets victory over his enemies.

Immediately after the agnatavasa period, Arjuna in the disguise of Bruhannale took his Ayudha from Shamee Vruksha and fought against Kauravaas in Uttara Gograhana, when they attacked Virata Nagara. Arjuna brought victory for Virata Raja.

Tomorrow is Ekadashi(Parivartani Ekadashi / Vaman Ekadashi)

On this Ekadasi day Lord Vishnu who reclines on Aadishesha turns to another side and this turn is called as Parivarthan.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Parsava Ekadashi which is also known as Parivartini, Vamana and Jayanti Ekadashi is observed during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Bhadrapada i.e. August and September. It is important to note that ‘Parivartini’ means ‘of change’ and denotes a time when Shesh-Shayi Narayan (form of God laying on the serpent Shesh) changes his position, posture, direction and faces the East. One must note that this Ekadasi happens during the Dakshinayana Punyakalam. It is interesting to note the famous age old belief that Lord Vishnu who takes rest during this period changes his posture of sleep namely he turns from left side to right side. It is because of this reason that this Ekadashi is also known as Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi.

As a matter of practice Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this Ekadashi day. The reason as to why this Ekadasi is also known as Vamana Ekadashi is simply because Vamana Avatar took place during this period. As a matter of fact King Mahabali was sent to pathalam on this day and therefore the Onam festival which celebrates the return of Mahabali takes place during this period.

Historical literature reveals that the importance and relevance of this Ekadasi was narrated to Yudhisthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, by Lord Krishna. Yudhisthira was inquisitive regarding the history, relevance and purport of the Ekadashi and wanted Lord Krishna to enlighten him. In reply to the queries he was informed that Ekadashi bestows both great merit and ultimate liberation from material bondage and that if one truly desires salvation from the material world he should fast on Vamana Ekadashi.

It is believed that those who observe this Ekadashi will be absolved of their sins. As per the religious calendar this Ekadashi also happens during the Chaturmas period. As a matter of practice those who undertake fast on this day avoid grains and rice.Practically while observing this holy fast a Vaishnava should lovingly worship the Supreme Lord in his form as Vamanadeva i.e. the dwarf incarnation, whose eyes are like lotus petals.

A VALUABLE ARTICLE ON GANESHA CHATURTHI by Shri Narahari Sumadhwa...

Ganesh Chaturthi
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Lord Ganesh is considered to be the God who has the ability to bestow wisdom and wealth upon humans. All the new undertakings, whether at place of work or at home, start by reciting the mantra of Lord Ganesha. He is known as the God of good luck and prosperity. Therefore, before any auspicious occasion, Hindus performs the puja of Lord Ganesha, to achieve success in it. Ganesh Chaturthi, the day marking the birth of the Lord, is celebrated in a grand manner in Maharashtra as well as other parts of India. It falls in the Hindu lunar month of Bhadra and lasts over a period of ten days. One of the most loving festivals of India, Ganesh Chaturthi has many legends associated with it. Given below are the legends from Shiv and Skanda Purana.

Legend From Shiv Purana
The most popular legend associated with Lord Ganesha can be found in the Shiv Purana. It says that Lord Ganapati was created out of the dough that Goddess Parvati used for her bath. The Goddess wanted a door-keeper, to prevent the coming of any visitors when she took a bath. So, she created a doll from the dough and breathed life into him. The day she did this came to be known as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, which we today celebrate as Ganesh Chaturthi.

On day, while Goddess Parvati was taking her bath, Lord Shiva happened to visit her. Ganesha did not know him, so he did not allow the Lord to enter the house. This made Lord Shiva angry and he beheaded Ganesha. Later, when he came to know the truth, he fixed the head of an elephant in place of Ganesha's head. With this, the appearance of Lord Ganesha changed and he came to have the head of an elephant.

Legend From Skanda Purana
There is yet another popular legend associated with Ganesh Chaturthi, arising from Skanda Purana. It goes that once Ganesha was invited for a feast in Chandralok. He ate many Ladoos and later, as he got up to walk after the meal, he could not balance himself, because of his huge stomach, and slipped. His stomach burst and all the laddoos came rolling out. Seeing this, the moon could not control himself and began laughing. Ganesha got angry and cursed the moon that it will vanish from the universe.

Because of moon's absence, the whole world began to wane. The gods asked Lord Shiva to get Ganesha to change his mind. The moon also apologized for his misbehavior. Finally, Ganesha modified his curse saying that the moon would be invisible on only one day of a month and would be partially seen on Ganesha Chaturthi. He also added that anyone who watches moon on Ganesha Chaturthi would face a false accusation. This is the reason why, even today, it is considered inauspicious to look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.

......................................
1. Who is Ganesha or Vinayaka or Ganapathi?
- Ganesha is the son of Parvathi – Parameshwara. Vinayaka is the abhimani devata for akaasa (space or sky) – bhootakaasha. He has Mooshika as his vaahana, he has modaka in his hands, We have to worship Ganapathi as the Srihari's parivara devate. We must never worship him as supreme.

2. What is the kakshya of Vinayaka?
Ganapathi is in the 18th Kakshya alongwith Vishwaksena, Sheshashatastaru, Kubera, and Ashwini Devategalu. Ganapathi was born as “Charudeshna”, the son of Krishna-Rukmini.

3. It is said that Parvathi got Ganapathi out of her body’s mud. Is it without the knowledge of Rudra?
As per Skanda Purana (Tamasa purana) Parvathi got son out of her body’s mud. But we must not take the story as it is. It gives a wrong picture on Parvathi. When Parvathi created Ganesha out of her body’s mud, does it mean that she had lot of mud in her body, how that much of mud can come to her. When she was born as "Sati", the daughter of Daksha prajapathi, she had created fire (agni) out of her body and entered fire. She only took out some portion of Pruthvi amsha out of her body.

Parvathi she herself cannot create a son. She cannot by herself can give birth to a child. A Woman without the support and anugraha of a Purusha, cannot produce a child and such things are not found anywhere. We must understand that Parvathi created Vinayaka only out of the grace, anugraha, and support of her husband Rudra, but not of her own power. Sri Jagannathadasaru says ""ಪಿನಾಕಿ ಭಾರ್ಯಾತನುಜ ಮೃದ್ಭವ" (pinaki bhaaryatanuja mrudbhava".

As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana (Rajasa purana) – the birth of Ganesha is different – It goes on like this. :-
Parvathi wanted to have a child and did the penance to Srihari, who blessed her with her desire.
Once Shiva – Parvathi were together (in ekaantha) and Shiva was about to discharge his Veerya in her. By that time some sages came and sought Bhiksha. Parvathi left Shiva in the middle and went to arrange for the Bhiksha of the sages. In the meantime, the Veerya in Shiva which should have been deposited in Parvathi fell on the ground, and a handsome boy was born. That boy was none other than Ganapathi. So, Ganapathi was born with the anugraha of Shiva only.

Note - Here both the puranaas are written by Sri Vedavyasaru only, one is a tamasa purana and the other a rajasa purana. The Skanda purana on Ganapathi seems to be mohaka purana.

4. How Vinayaka got the head of the elephant?
Here also two versions –
As per Skanda Purana – which is a famous story – Parvathi went to take bath and installed Ganapathi as the security. Shiva came with thirsty and was about to enter the house, whom Ganapathi stopped. Shiva out of anger, removed the head of Ganapathi. When Parvathi came out she saw the dead son and begged Shiva to give life to him. Shiva in turn, then realised that Ganapathi was his son only, and ordered his servants to bring the head of anyone who is lying with the head towards North Direction. The servants saw no one sleeping with head towards North and found an elephant sleeping so. They cut off the head of that elephant and gave it to Shiva, who placed on the body of Ganapathi and brought back to life.

As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana – it is a different story - Ganapathy was very handsome. All gods, Rushees, Munees wanted to have his darshana. Everybody came there to Kailasa to have his darshana and were praising the Gananayaka. Parvathi was very much happy at her son. After all gods came, Shanaischara, who had come to Kailasa was hesitating to see Ganapathy and was sitting out. Parvathi realizing this asked Shani to come and have the darshana of Ganapathy. Shani told that he had a curse from his wife that if he sees anybody directly his head would be cut off. (Once Shani was doing Dhyana. At that time his wife, daughter of Chitraratha, came in front of him, but Shani who was in dhyana did not see her at all. So she cursed him that whoever he sees directly would get his head cut off).

Parvathi compels Shani to see Ganapathy, which he agreed and sees him. As soon as he saw him directly, Ganapathy’s face was cut. Parvathi now repented for having forced Shani to see his son and she was crying. As such Ganapathy lost his head.

Parvathi prayed Srihari who immediately rushed there. Srihari went and removed the head of an elephant which was sleeping head faced towards North.

Acharya Madhwa in his Maandookopanishat Bhashya has written - Sri Ganesha is the aradhaka of Vishwa Taijasa roopa. Both are are Jaagrat and Svapnavaste niyamaka roopa. - i.e., Vishvambara roopa. It has 19 heads. The Central face is Gajamukha, whereas the other 18 faces are human faces. Ganesha was doing the chintana of "Vishvambara roopa" of Srihari. As such, he got the Gajamukha.

5 . Why Srihari brought the head of the elephant and placed it on Ganapathy -
As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana -
Once Doorvasa sage gave the nirmalya of Srihari to Indra, the god of Heaven. Indra in turn put it on the head of the elephant, which threw and touched with its legs. As such, having neglected Nirmalya of Srihari Indra got so many problems and he had to loose his power also. Ultimately after Samudra Mathana, after getting Amrutha, Devendra got back his power. Here, that elephant which touched the nirmalya of Srihari with its legs got the sin. As such, it had to be punished. Srihari removed the head of that elephant and placed it on Ganapathy. Further, that elephant was lucky to have the sparsha of Harinivedita nirmalya and as such, its head could become the head of Ganapathy.

6. Naming ceremony of Ganapathy – Parvathi requested Srihari to name the child – So, Srihari himself gave 8 names –
Vignesha – as he is the pariharaka of obstacles.
Ganesha – as he is the head of Ganaas,
Heramba – as he fought with Shiva
Gajanana – as he has the face of elephant (Gajakarna)
Lambodara – as he has long udara
Shoorpakarna – as he has broad ears
Vinayaka - as he is always immersed in the dhyana of Srihari
Ekadanta – as he has one tusk

7. Why Ganapathy lost of his “danta” and became "Ekadanta" –
As per Skanda purana – Once Ganapathy was sitting on his vehicle, the rat and moving. Suddenly one snake passed and the rat on seeing the snake, got fear and shaked, Vinayaka who was sitting on the rat fell. Chandra who saw this laughed at Ganesha. Ganapathy got angry at Chandra, he removed one of his danta and threw at him.

As per Brahma Vaivartha purana –
Jamadagni, the father of Parashurama, was killed by Karthaveeryarjuna. Parashurama got angry and wanted to kill him. At this time, the gods and rushees told that Karthaveeryarjuna is blessed with the boon and as such, he has to obtain vidya from Shiva to enable him to kill Karthaveeryarjuna. Parashurama, the incarnation of Srihari, loka reethya went to Shiva for learning Shastra vidya (weapon vidya) with Shiva. ( Here we must note that - Shiva did the samarpana of shastra vidya to Parashurama). After killing Karthaveeryarjuna, Parashurama again returned and wanted to do the samarpana of the killing of Karthaveeryarjuna to his guru (loka reethya). Ganapathy who was standing in front of Kailasa stopped Parashurama telling that his parents are in Ekantha. Parashurama insisted to go inside. Ganapathy told that him if he wants to go inside, he has to fight with him and go inside. Parashurama pretended angry and took his weapon and was about to throw at Ganapathy. Now, Ganapathy realizing his mistake repented and begged to remove one of his tooth (danta) as a punishment for having prevented him from entering. Parashurama removed that Danta (tooth) of Ganapathy . As such, Ganapathy is having only one danta – Ekadanta.

8. What is the importance of Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi ?
It is the day on which Ganapathy had his rebirth – i.e., the day on which he got the elephant’s head. Further, Shiva blessed him that before starting any new work, agriculture, wedding, or any function, one must do the pooja of Vigneshwara so that there will not be any obstacles in completion of that work and that it would be completed confortably.

9. Why we must not see Chandra on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi –
As already informed once Ganapathy was sitting on his chariot rat (mooshika Vahana Ganapathy) after eating heavy food on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi. The rat saw a snake passing nearby and the rat become unconscious on seeing the snake and fell down. Ganesha sitting on the rat fell down on the ground. The sweet balls which Ganesha had in his hand fell on the ground and Ganesha took it and put them again in his belly. Ganesha took the snake which was moving and tied to his belly as a belt. Seeing the mischievous actions of Ganesha, Chandra laughed in the sky. Ganesha felt it as disrespect to him by Chandra, and cursed him that “no one shall see Chandra in future”. With this Chandra repented and came down and did the prarthana to Ganesha for pardon.

Note – Chandra is in the 12th Kakshya whereas Ganapathi is in the 18th Kakshya. How can he accept the curse by Ganapathi? - Chandra on being hit by Ganesha, understood and saw that it is not mere Ganesha, but actually paramathma, the Vishwambara roopa of Srihari and sought apology from paramathma present in Ganesha.
Then Ganesha was convinced and reduced the curse that Chandra should decrease day by day in Krishna paksha. Further, let no one shall see Chandra on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi day and that who ever see Chandra shall have “mistake or misunderstanding and shall have some blame”.

10. Worshipping of Ganapathy as Sarvottama is wrong –
Vinayaka is the son of Rudra. For those who have tamasa gunas, Vinayaka in order to make them to a fierceful states, makes them to do Sankashti Vratha, and gives sukha, which is the reason for hell later. Some people are performing Sankashti Vratha on every Krishna Paksha Chaturthi day. Ganesha blesses them fully or partially and then pushes them to hell. Because those who perform such vratas are basically tamasic souls. Because – They pray that Ganapathy is Sarvottama. They prey that Ganapathi is the Creater, protector and destroyer, etc. As such, Madhwas are not supposed to do Sankashti Vratha.

11. gaNaanaam pati: = dEvagaNaanaam pati: = hari: = Actually the word “Ganapathy” means Srihari only. All Vedaas, all shabdhaas, vaakyaas, whether pourusheya or apouresheya, all speak, sing only the glorious of Srihari only.

12. Worshipping of Ganapathy by greater gods :

a. In order to kill daithyaas, Devendra did pooja of Ganapathi
b. While constructing the bridge to Lanka, Sri Ramachandra did the pooja of Ganapathi.
c. Yudhistira did the pooja of Ganapathi as per the orders of Krishna.
d. Shiva himself did the pooja of Ganapathy before starting war with Tripurasura.
e. Krishna also did the pooja of Ganapathy
Here all the gods mentioned are superior to Ganapathi in Kakshya. All of them did the pooja only loka reethya and to bless Ganapathy. Ramachandra did the pooja to Ganapathi being the pooja of himself his own Vishwambararoopa which was in Ganapathi. Dharmaraja did pooja of Ganapathi to respect the boons granted by Shiva to Vinayaka and to mislead the wicked souls also.

13. Vinayaka getting the face of an elephant as per Acharya Madhwa as found in Maandookopanishat Upanishad Bhashya –
Vinayaka getting the face of an elephant is actually based on sruti. He is very great devotee of Sri Hari, in the roopa of “Vishwambaramurthy”, who controls the waking state and “taijasa” named paramathma who controls the dream state of jeevas.

Bhagavan, the Vaishnara is denoted by the sacred pranava “Omkara”. And is the instigator and controller of Mahalakshmi. He has four swaroopaas. In each jeeva, Paramathma resides in four roopaas. In the waking state, he resides in the right eye. He has 7 limbs, which means 4 hands, 1 tusk, and 2 legs. He has 19 faces The middle one is that of an elephant’s face. On both sides of that face, there are 9 faces.
Vinayaka was always meditating on this centre face of Vaishnara which is that of an elephant and so by the sruti, he has the face of an elephant. - vinayakastu vishwasya dhyaanaat Et gajavaktrataam |

14. Ganapathi writing Mahabharatha as dictated by Vedavyasa devaru -
Ganapathi is the recipient of mercy from Lord Sri Vedavyasa. The story goes on that Sri Vedavyasa ordered to Sri Ganapathy to write Mahabharatha to the speed of his dictation.
Original Mahabharata consist of 60 lakhs granthas (Grantha means 32 letters) Sri Vedavyasa kept 30 lakhs granthas aside, not available to anyone, but only made available to Chaturmukha brahma, Vayu. Of the remaining 30 lakhs – was split into four portions –

a. 30 lakhs granthas were given to Narada Maharshi to teach the Devataas.
b. In that again another half of that, i.e., 15 lakhs Grantha were taken and given to the sages Asitha, and Devalaru, for teaching Pitru Devategalu.
c. Shukacharya was given 14 lakh granthas for teaching to Gandharvas
d. Final one lakh granthas were made available to Janamejaya Raja by Sri Vaisampayanaru. Only this final one lakh grantha is now available to us. This one lakh Grantha (approx 8800 shlokas) is said to be written by Ganapathi and not the entire Mahabharatha.

1. 15. Ravana incident - Shiva had given Raavana for Shiva pooja, his athmalinga, and instructed Ravana that the atmalinga should not be placed on the ground as it would establish itself where placed on earth. On the way, as the Sandhyavandana time arrived, Ravana asked Ganesha (in the disguise of a Brahmin boy), to look after the Athmalinga, (Shiva Idol) and went for Sandhyavandhana. Pl note - even Ravana, a Daithya was doing Sandhya vandana without fail. Ganesha told him he could not carry the idol for long time. Raavana told he will come early. Ganesha having known of the Athmalinga, he kept it on the ground itself, resulting in the Gokarneshwara atmalinga.

Tomorrw Aaja Ekadashi...

Aja Ekadashi Fast Story :
..............................

.........
In
ancient time, there ruled a Chakravarti Raja. His name was Harishchandra. He was a very brave, majestic and glorious ruler. To complete his promise he had sold his wife and son. He himself had become a servant of a cruel person.

There he used to give shroud. But, in this difficult work also he did not leave the path of truth. After many years, he started feeling bad about his work and became upset. Then he started reaching some way to get free from this work and always used to stay tensed with this thought.

Once, while he was wondering about what to do, he was Gautam Rishi coming. King bowed to him and narrated his sad story infront of Rishi. Rishi felt upset on listening and seeing the condition of king and said him “Hey king when Aja Ekadashi occurs. You should observe the fast of this Ekadasi in a systematic manner and perform the Jagran at night. You will get rid of all your sins.” Saying this Gautam Rishi went from there.

On the day of Aja Ekadashi, king observed the fast and performed Jagran, as told by Rishi. By the effect of this fast, all sins of the king were destroyed. At that time, flowers started showering from the sky. King saw Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and Shiva, standing before him. He was his dead son alive and his wife in good clothes and jewellery.

By the effect of fasting he got back his kingdom. After death, he reached heaven with his family. All this was the result of observing the fast of Aja Ekadashi. Person who observes this fast in a systematic manner and perform the Jagran at night , gets rid of his sins. And, he gets place in heaven after death. Just hearing the story of fast gives the result as of Ashvamedha Yagya.

** SHRI KRUSHNA JAYANTI **

Adya Shri Krushna Jayanti. Paramaatmanam Shri Narayanasya Krushna roopena pradurbhaava dinam. Today is Shri Krushna Jayanti, the avataara dina of Vaasudeva Krushna. It was 5185 years ago that the supreme being Shri Hari revealed his magnificent Krushna roopa to the universe. (How I arrived at the figure 5185 yrs - ShriKrushna appeared to the mortal eyes for approximately 106 years. Of these, 36 were after the onset of kaliyuga. Means 70 yrs in the dwaapara. We are in the 5115 th year of kaliyuga now. That puts the figure at 5185)
If ashtami tithi and rohini nakshatra coincide at the chandrodaya kaala (midnight), then the day is referred to as Shri Krushna Jayanti. If a different nakshatra coincides with ashtami, then the day is celebrated as Shri Krushna ashtami.
Upavaasa is compulsory for all humans on this day. Total upavaasa without even water... food is NOT to be taken at midnight, like some fools do. Food can be taken only the next day after the ashtami tithi ends. And in case of Krushna Jayanti, we should take food only after the tithi and rohini nakshatra end.
Special pooja should be offered to Krushna, Balaraama, vasudeva, devaki, nanda gopa, yashoda, rohini etc. In the mid of night, after chandra udaya, arghya should be offered to Shri Krushna with milk in shankha. Later arghya should also be given to chandra.
Balaraama IS NOT an incarnation of Narayana. Some fools believe otherwise.
Let us all celebrate today's joyous occasion with all our might.. let us fast. Tomorrow the upavaasa is to be completed only after 4.55 in the evening, as rohini nakshatra gets over only then. So it is a fast for a day and half. Man can survive without food and water for days. We have the capacity. Lets control our tongue.
KRUSHNAM VANDE JAGADGURUM! !
PREENAYAAMO VAASUDEVAM !!!
