On the occasion of Mahashivratri, we should all specially pray to the Great Vaishnava, Sri Rudra Deva. Sri Jagannatha Dasaru has showed us the way through his many praises of Lord Shiva in his great composition, HariKathaMruthaSara.
In the verse ``Vamadeva Virinchitanaya…”
, he has said how Maha Rudra is the controlling officer of our mind,
intellect and heart. His body is covered with white ash and shines like a
quartz stone. He is very handsome and fair.He is called Vamadeva
because of his soft nature. He resides in the north-east corner of the
eight petaled lotus in our heart.Vasudeva resides to the left (Vam side)
of this Rudra and is being constantly prayed by him. This is another
reason of calling him Vamdeva. He is called as Sadhyojatha because by praying, he immediately fulfils our wishes.
At the time of creation, Rudra
Deva is born from the eye-brows of Lord Brahma. He is the controller of
the element and essence of pride and ego, both positively and
negatively depending on the traits of the individual.During the time of
Destruction (Laya), Lord Sankarshana resides in Rudra Deva and performs
the duty of Destruction. That is why Rudra is also called Ughra.
The matted and braided hair(Jata) on the
head of lord Shiva is in the colour of smoke, a mixture if black and
red colours. So he is called Dhurjati. He is the cause
of constant happiness to Goddess Uma, his wife.He performs intense
penance to please Lord Vishnu in the Ocean of Salt for 10 kalpas (1
kalpa=4320000000 years= 1 day of Brahma) .So he is called Ugratapa.
Rudra Deva let his hair spread in the
vast sky (Akash) to catch Ganga and hold the Padodaka of Lord Vishnu in
his hair. So he is also called Vyomakesha. He is called Kruthivasa because he wears the skin of a tiger and covers himself with the skin of an elephant.
He is the spiritual teacher and guide for Lord Indra and all the other Gods. When
Manmatha (Kamadeva) tried to create obstacles to his penance, he opens
his third eye on his forehead and burns him to ashes.Lord Rudra resides
on the Mount Kailash. He grants the boons to his devotees according to
their eligibility.
He is the affectionate giver of
knowledge of Heirarchy (Taratamya) and panchbeda (mutual difference
between God, Living things and non-living things). He is the disciple of
Lord Vayu and learns from him for 40 Brahma Kalpa. He does penance in
the ocean of Salt for 10 Kalpas and attains the post of Shesha, the bed
of Lord Vishnu, with his blessings.Let us pray that this Lord Rudra with
the above attributes give us prosperity.
In another verse,(Nandivahana…..) Rudra `s vehicle is the Bull.
When Trivikrama( Vamana) grows in size
to accept the Dana given by Emperor Bali, his toenail touches the shell
of this Universe. Ganga enters the Universe from this crack with the
name Nalini. Rudra accepts this Nalini on his head as the water washing
the feet of the Lord (padodaka). So he is also called Nalinidhara. He also wears the moon on his head, So he is called Moulinda Shekara and ChandraMouleshwara. He
is the controller of our mind ,so if we have to get concentration
during our worship of Lord Vishnu, we need the grace and help of Rudra
Deva. That is why Dasaru has sung `Kailasa vasa Gowrisha Esha, Tailadhareyente manasu kodu Hariyalli`.He is called Shiva because he is the giver of prosperity and auspiciousness.
He has the Surya (sun) in his right eye,
Chandra (moon) in his left eye and Agni (Fire) in the eye on his
forehead. So he is called Trinetra and Triyambaka. He is the killer of the Demon named Andhakasura, so is called Andhakasuramathana. After killing the Demon named Gajasura (Elephant demon) ,he wears his skin as desired by Gajasura, so he is also called Gajacharmadhara. He also wears the skin of Vyagrasura, The tiger demon. So he is called Shardula charmadhara.
He is prayed by all the 3 types of
Living things in this Universe, ie., Satvika (pure and good souls),
Nitya samsari (souls with both positive and negative qualities) and
Tamasa ( souls who are bad and wicked). He gives Satviks good
concentration in worship to God, he gives nitya samsaris prosperity in
this living world and makes the Daitya do great penance but finally go
to their world called Tamas. So Rudra is called Trijagavandhya and Trilochana.Durvasa,
Ashwathama, Jaigeshavya, Shuka are some of his incarnations. In the
form of Ashwathama, he sends the Brahmastra to kill Prikshita but comes
as Shuka at the end to provide salvation to him.
Lord Rudra is very compassionate and
merciful. Disciples prays to this husband of Parvati, Pashupati with
utmost devotion to protect us and bless us.
